Faith
He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.
Romans 4:20-21 (NKJV)
Romans 4:20-21 (NKJV)
Abraham, the father of faith, trusted the promise of God even in the face of what appeared to be impossible. God had promised him a son. But he and his wife were passed child-bearing years, how could such a thing happen? As you can imagine there would have been lots of reasons to doubt that this would actually take place. But notice Abraham’s faith – “He did not waver at the promise of God…” Faith is taking God at His word. It is believing that God will do the very thing He said He would. And this can be very hard.
How many times have we wavered in our faith over things that were so much smaller than the difficulties that Abraham faced? I know I have.
One of the things we can learn from Abraham’s example to us is that he gave glory to God. Praise is so important in the Christian’s relationship with the Lord. Praise remembers who God is, what He has done, and gives Him glory for it all. This can greatly help the Christian because it reminds him of how great his God is and, in turn, it helps strengthen His faith. It helps him continue to be fully convinced that what God has promised He will perform.
If you ever find yourself tempted with unbelief, doubt, or fear then praise your Father in heaven because He will remind you of His greatness as you do and He will strengthen your faith.
May we be bold in our faith and encouraged by the Holy Spirit as we continue to trust in the promises of God. In time, like Abraham, our eyes will see the promises of God come to pass.
